From the press release:
". . . explores the psychological conflict that many men felt while involved in the VIETMAN WAR. It is a story of love, action, and myth, which when combined, brings a wonderful novel to life."

1968 : A Novel
Set in the Central Highlands before Tet. This is a novel, but not science fiction. The well-known author is a vet.

Forever Peace
Per the author: "My latest novel, . . . is strongly influenced by Vietnam. It's set during a First World/Third World war fifty years from now. It won the Hugo, Nebula, and John W. Campbell Awards for "best science fiction novel of the year," the first novel to win all three in the past 22 years. (The Hugo is voted upon by readers; the Nebula by writers, and the John W. Campbell by critics and academics.)'"

Forever War
I'm throwing this in even though it is not "about Vietnam," although it is about war and I know of teachers who include it when they teach Vietnam literature, but because it is the author's best known work so far and is a science fiction classic.

Parallels : The Soldiers' Knowledge and the Oral History of Contemporary Warfare
I enjoyed this book which compared the experience of Russian veterans of Afghanistan with the experience of Vietnam veterans. Most, if not all, of the Vietnam veterans are participants in a PTSD program. The interviews were very graphic. Includes the story of nurse Nikki Nicol.

Women's Perspectives on the Vietnam War
Per the publisher: A broad and colorful overview of the diverse roles played by American and Vietnamese women during the war as combatants, nurses, social workers, politicians, journalists, entertainers, wives and mothers. Challenges the reader to appreciate the vital role of women in what typically is considered a young man's affair. Illustrated. Discussion questions included. 1991

On
Point : A Rifleman's Year in the Boonies : Vietnam 1967-1968
"Per the author: On Point describes the world of an infantryman in Vietnam. The tale begins with the induction of a 20 year-old young man in 1967. After military training, I arrived in Vietnam like a wide-eyed tourist, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the country. As a replacement soldier, some time elapsed until I felt accepted by the combat-hardened soldiers of my platoon. I worked on developing the skills of a soldier such as walking point and exploring tunnels. I made a gradual transition from a "new guy" to a squad leader. Along the way I was wounded four times.
Through On Point, readers will share the experiences of listening posts, ambush patrols, search-and-destroy missions, firefights, and the terror of walking point alone in the dark. The book describes the close relationships formed by men at war, and friendships that I made with a Vietnamese boy and a girl. It also explores some of the processes that were involved in the war, such as the testing period of new arrivals, the quick rotation of officers in combat leadership positions, the disadvantages of the 365 day rotation, and the adjustment to the tropical climate. It contains a touch of humor and a bit of romance. Eric Bergerud, who wrote the foreword for my book, said it is "written with a hard edge, but with smiles on the corners."
If you're a veteran or someone who is casually interested in Vietnam, this book was written for you."

Paco's Story
ARMY 25th DIV (AUTHOR): A well known, quite slim, novel, slight only in size. Paco is sort of a living ghost returned to "the world" but not of it and the character remained with me, in that when I see the book or something reminds me of it, I stop to think about Paco and where he might be . . .

Cooler by the Lake
If you read the excellent interview above, disregard the author's remarks about this book. It isn't about Vietnam. It is about a con man in Chicago and very funny reading.

Nolan said of it: "The best grunt-level, tell-it-like-it-was work I've read.
Captures the tedium the language, the the realities of Vietnam. The Proud Bastards is a
classic."

The Living and the Dead : Robert McNamara and Five Lives of a Lost War
The book is essays on McNamara, a helicopter crew member, a nurse and three other people. It contains a particularly detailed account of the Quaker who immolated himself outside the Pentagon in protest of the war. It is written in a mannered style, sort of a lineal colloquial descendant of Trollope. I enjoyed a book he wrote on a depression era photographer, "Looking for the Light: The Hidden Life and Art of Marion Post Walcott," which is now out of print. Sept 1996

To Have and To Hold
This is an account by a 1st Cav scout pilot of his two tours, and of meeting and courting his wife, who was a nurse with the 85th Evac, Phu Bai. They were married in Vietnam. You may know of this as the book that inspired the children of Granite Falls to prod that town into holding the first Veterans' Day parade since 1918. The book is quite good. It was written for the author's children and embraced by a classroom, but I would not consider it a children's book.

This was one of the earlier books about Vietnam and like everything else about the war, it wasn't the usual history. Written in the style of Wolfe or Hunter, Herr is credited with making real the "rock n' roll" war. You need to read it.

Tobey Herzog is a Vietnam veteran and a scholar. He looks at the literature of the Vietnam war, placing it in a context with the literature from other wars. It is written in a very readable style and will be of interest to Vietnam veterans and scholars.
